School Children’s Chess Tournament 27 October

114 enthusiastic children competed in the recent School Children’s Chess Tournament held at the ATW Sports Ground

Check and Checkmate were the order of the day as nine primary schools and three secondary schools fought it out to see who was the best. A school from Maryborough also attended. This is one of the chess events of the year for children and competition was keen with no quarter given and none asked for.

In the primary section, the team from St Patricks was victorious, defeating their old rivals Norville. Maryborough Central State School gained third place by half a point over Central School. The top players for the day were Dylan Hepenstall (St Patricks), Brierley Hohn (Norville) and Tim Harris (St Patricks)

In the secondary section, Bundaberg High was victorious, defeating their old rivals Kepnock High. Shalom gained third place. The top players for the day were Rhys Mortensen (Bundaberg High), Matthew Riggs (Independent)  and Tyran Redman (Shalom). Bundaberg High also retained the Secondary School Shield.

Bundaberg Chess Club Secretary Allan Menham said many children were playing in their first tournament, and clocks were used on most tables. Many of the games were of a high standard and this is no doubt due to the numerous chess clubs in the district schools. Numerous cash prizes were awarded owing to the kind gesture of the ATW making the venue available free of cost.

Another tournament will be held in October next year.
