The next Sunday Tournament will be on 31 January 2010 and this will also be the first round of the 2010 Grand Prix Tournament.

Sunday Children’s Chess Tournament 25 October 09

Only eight competitors competed in the Sunday Children’s Chess Tournament held on 25 October. The reason for the low attendance was due to some of the children who normally play in the Sunday Tournaments being in Brisbane competing in the State School Children’s Chess Championships.

Matthew Riggs was top scorer of the day with a perfect seven out of seven games. He was closely followed by Rhys Mortensen with six out of seven games.

The event was played as a Round Robin Tournament instead of a Swiss tournament owing to the number of entrants.

The next Sunday Children’s Chess Tournament will be held on 29 November when the last round of the yearly Grand Prix will be played. Interest will be keen as there are only three and a half points separating the four top scoring Grand Prix competitors at this stage.

Club Secretary Allan Menham said the standard of chess just continues to improve in Bundaberg amongst the children. There is also an active chess club and six of the children competing in Brisbane are junior members of the Bundaberg Chess Club Inc.

Thirty six players attended the Bundaberg Weekend Chess Tournament on the weekend of 25/26 August.

International Chess Master Stephen Solomon attended and was the outright winner of the Tournament, winning six out of six games.  Second place was gained by David Lovejoy from NSW with five out of six games. Equal third and fourth place was gained by Michael Cashman from Brisbane and Keith McLeod of Bundaberg, each with 4.5 out of six games. Many children played with him during breaks between rounds and he won nearly all of these games. In the tournament itself, he won 3 out of six games against some very strong players. He always had a crowd around him between rounds watching him play.

A Club Spokesperson said that the Club planned to conduct another tournament on the last weekend in August next year. A larger attendance is expected next year as the attendance this year was affected by the heavy rain between Brisbane and Bundaberg during the week.
